ProjectionTools calibration software from domeprojection, a brand of VIOSO, is relied on by some of the world's most advanced simulators and plays a key role in this state-of-the-art maritime simulator.
Manoeuvre simulators are the most demanding in terms of visualisation, where achieving both accuracy and realism presents significant challenges. Projection onto a panoramic screen surrounding the bridge is the solution that best meets these requirements. The screen, consisting of a PVC canvas stretched over an aluminium structure, measures 16 metres in diameter and is 6 metres high.
The image is projected by five carefully calibrated 4K laser projectors to achieve uniform and consistent projection across the entire screen. A short-throw projector completes this installation by providing the rear view of the wheelhouse.
Finally, four screens were positioned on each side of the gangway wings to optimise the simulation of docking and undocking manoeuvres.
After a recent service of the projection hardware, it was necessary to recalibrate the whole setup to ensure that this flagship simulator operated at peak performance. When not a single pixel can be out of place, camera-based calibration is the only option. The operators turned to specialised system integrator project:syntropy, to undertake this task.
Commenting on the calibration, Malin Hallbeck, Key Account Manager at project:syntropy, said, “This is a very unique configuration that was fascinating to work on. We chose ProjectionTools as we knew we could rely on it to give pixel-perfect calibration of each projection channel. Continuing, she notes “in some camera positions, the calibration camera had to be mounted high above the projected surface and bridge house to capture the full projection and, to also, crucially, be able to 3D measure the markers on these surfaces.”
The preparation of the camera positions was undertaken at the Magdeburg office of domeprojection. Christian Steinmann, VIOSO and domeprojection CTO, said: “By analysing each camera position, we can absolutely ensure the highest precision possible.”
He continues “We have a long history of successful projects with project:syntropy, and we are happy to have played a role in enabling a state-of-the-art maritime manoeuvring simulator, which is the largest and most immersive in France. It truly is an impressive simulator, with 120 maritime pilots (representing half of all French pilots) sharing the same tool and 18 fully modelled ports”.
The ProjectionTools software allows for multiple eyepoint profiles to be created and stored, ensuring the simulator can be used in multiple scenarios without any additional reconfiguration. In total, three eyepoint profiles were provided: Centre point – Port Side point and Starboard point.
Wärtsilä NTPRO (Navi-Trainer Professional) is an advanced maritime simulation solution designed to provide highly realistic, standards-compliant training for navigation, ship handling, and operational safety. Powered by the Wärtsilä real-time simulation engine, it integrates a dedicated domeprojection plugin to apply the necessary correction data, ensuring precise visual alignment and immersive training experiences
This advanced ship-handling simulator is used to train maritime pilots from 18 French stations and to model new port developments, which are then tested by these same pilots in an immersive simulation environment.
The provisions relating to professional training activities are certified by the QUALIOPI standard, which guarantees the quality of services.
